Engraved commemorative coin, the Amacree, 1788

This bronze commemorative coin from 1788 is engraved with the words ‘John Cread Liverpool’ on one side and ‘Success to the Amacree’ on the other side. The Amacree was registered as a trading slave ship between Liverpool and Africa and could carry up to 363 captives. This item is not an unusual one. Such things can be found in almost every museum and archive. There are many examples of Britain’s slaving heritage in the cities and in the countryside.
