Slavery

Watch an actor read the words of Mary Prince describing her experience working in the salt ponds in the Turks Islands in the Caribbean in the early 1800s. This was after she had already been sold three times.

Mary Prince escaped slavery when her owners travelled to England. She was helped by the Anti-Slavery Society and they had her experiences as a slave written down by Susanna Strickland, a Quaker friend, in 1831. This autobiographical record of her life became an important part of the abolitionists
