Activity Capture

Themes this can be used for:

Triangular Trade

Explain to students that African people were paid by the British to capture other African people, often from neighbouring ethnic groups or enemies and rivals.

Show students objects that illustrate how African people were transported in coffles, linked together by yokes or chains as they were marched from the interior to the coast. This journey could take months. Thousands of captives may then be held underground in trading forts such as Elmina Castle in Ghana.

Play the sound extracts. Ask students to work in pairs to record in note form what is taking place from the point of view of the captive. They should focus on what is happening to them and how they may feel.
