This is the receipt for the purchase of an enslaved person by M. Harwell, auctioneer, Montgomery, Alabama, dated 5 April 1864, for $3000 in payment for ‘a Negro boy named Frederick about eighteen years of age’. The receipt shows an enslaved male collecting cotton in a basket, with a paddle steamer in the background.
