This Bible was held in the family of William Wilberforce until the twentieth century. Inside the cover it contains a handwritten family tree in which Wilberforce’s birth is recorded as 24 August 1759.
Wilberforce was a very religious man and his faith helped support his belief in the anti-slave trade campaign. Many other abolitionists were also Christians who believed slavery was evil and incompatible with living as a Christian.
