Abolition Campaign medallion

British abolitionists celebrated their victory by issuing a series of commemorative medallions. The example shown here offers a challenge to the people of America, but others featured portraits of leading campaigners. It was manufactured in Birmingham, 1834. With the benefit of hindsight, however, we might consider the self congratulatory element of the medallions questionable.
