Daily Occurrences Book, Golden Rock Plantation, Nevis, 1776

The Occurrences book was kept by the Overseer and recorded the day-to-day activities on the plantation. It noted the size of the different work gangs, what they were doing, who was sick etc. It also included details of punishments inflicted on the enslaved, and the efforts to re-capture those who had run away. The entry shown here, for example, for Sunday 3 November 1776 records a horrific attack by the overseer on an enslaved man named ‘Harry’.
