Joseph Mallord William Turner’s controversial painting ‘The Slave Ship or Slaves Throwing Overboard the Dead and Dying – Typhoon coming on’ is put on display at the Royal Academy in London; the same exhibition includes Auguste Biard’s painting ‘Scene on the Coast of Africa’. Turner’s picture refers to the Zong which arrived in Jamaica in 1781 with 60 enslaved African people missing, later found to have been pushed overboard to their deaths.
The illegal trade of enslaved African people continues even though the Royal Navy tries to stop it.
